Flyers Win 5-3 in Fight-Filled Contest
Multiple altercations break out in final 1:45 of game against Ottawa
Philadelphia, PA – After falling behind early in the game, the Flyers scored four unanswered goals en route to a fight-filled 5-3 victory over the Ottawa Senators at the Wachovia Center.
With 1:45 left in the game and the Flyers leading 5-2, a six-on-six brawl erupted that included a fight between the goaltenders. It began after Donald Brashear and Rob Ray fought, with Ray getting pounded and leaving the ice with a bloodied face.
Soon after the conclusion of that fight, every player dropped his gloves, and Lalime skated the length of the ice to grab a hold of Robert Esche, who was in the middle of it.
Fight upon fight occurred for the remainder of the game, and at the conclusion, just six players were left on either side.
“Their tough guy got beat up,” said Ken Hitchcock of the original fight between Brashear and Ray. “Then their next-in-lines fought two guys who don’t fight.”
“It was great to see every guy stick up for each other,” said Esche. “We all saw [Recchi] get stuck pretty well the other game by [Martin] Havlat. It was a coincidence that he was in the penalty box when it all happened. We still have one game against them and hopefully we can play the same way.”
“That coach is not stupid, he knew,” said Brashear of Havlat being in the penalty box. “I went out and fought a tough guy. I could have jumped on a good player hurt him. Ray went after Sami Kapanen and started throwing punches at him. If you want to screw around, we will take care of business.” (!!! <- ganz großes kino )
Down 1-0 on a goal by Ottawa’s Chris Neil, Claude Lapointe tied the game at 10:41 of the first period when his wrist shot from the side of the face off circle somehow got through goaltender Patrick Lalime, as the puck bounced off of Lalime’s glove and in.
Philadelphia took the lead just 30 seconds later, when Mark Recchi rebounded an attempt from John LeClair for his team-leading 25th goal of the season.
A franchise milestone was reached on Danny Markov’s goal at 16:10 of the first period. Markov flung a shot on net from the high slot that deflected off of the glove of Neil and past Lalime, for the 10,000th goal in club history.
The Flyers are the seventh team in NHL history to register 10,000 goals as a franchise, joining the original six teams in the league.
Philadelphia’s league leading power play increased the cushion to 4-1. With good puck movement, Alexei Zhamnov fed the puck to John Slaney at the point, and Slaney quickly sent a cross-ice pass to Kim Johnsson, who then got off a quick shot that found the top corner at 5:22 of the second period.
Slaney registered two assists on the night for the Flyers in seeing extended ice time due to a couple of injuries on the blue line. Both Chris Therien and Joni Pitkanen left the game in the first period and did not return – Therien with a left shoulder strain and Pitkanen after he got his bell rung.
Ottawa defenseman Zdeno Chara scored a power play goal for the Senators on a slap shot from the high slot to make it a 4-2 game at the second intermission
Esche was solid in net in getting his second consecutive win. He made a key stop in the third period, as the Senators’ Antonie Vermette charged in all alone on goal. Vermette made a move and went to his backhand, but Esche stayed with him and made the stop with his left pad.
Moments later, Zhamnov scored on a loose puck at the side of the Ottawa net to make it a 5-2 game at 6:54, as the Senators were unable to clear the puck out of the crease after Simon Gagne’s attempt was muted by Lalime.
With a goal and an assist, Zhamnov increased his point-scoring streak to six games. He has four goals and five assists over that span.
“We played one of our best games of the year tonight, and we showed up as a group,” said Hitchcock.
Still, most of the post-game discussion centered on the last two minutes of the game.
“It got to 5-2 and that type of thing happens,” said Recchi. “This game was played with a lot of emotions. My team didn’t forget what Havlat did last game. ‘Brash’ made a statement, they responded and we responded back. We played a terrific game, it was a huge two points, and you can’t lose sight of that. We stuck together.”
The Senators visit Philadelphia once more this season on April 2, as the Flyers wrap up their home schedule.
