ST. LOUIS (CP) - The St. Louis Blues will sell the Worcester IceCats, their American Hockey League affiliate, to a pair of businessmen who will move the club to Peoria, Ill., for the 2005-06 season, the NHL club said Tuesday.
The deal with Bruce Saurs and Anne Griffith and the relocation both need approval from the AHL's Board of Governors. In Peoria, the IceCats would continue to operate as the Blues' affiliate.
The IceCats are currently playing their 11th season in Worcester. The Peoria Rivermen of the now defunct International Hockey League served as the primary base for the Blues' minor league system from the mid 1980s through 1994.
The Blues purchased the financially struggling IceCats in 2001.
``By having our AHL affiliate team in Peoria, where it will be operated by strong local ownership, the Blues will benefit by halting our substantial operating losses as our AHL franchise owner in Worcester while maintaining our ability to monitor and develop our prospects,'' said Mark Sauer, president and CEO of the Blues.
Saurs and Griffith currently own and operate the Peoria Rivermen of the East Coast Hockey League. The Rivermen are the Blues' current ECHL affiliate.
