Tough love for Flyers' rookies
Acquiring veteran defenseman Dmitry Yushkevich from the Los Angeles Kings for a couple draft picks was a good move for the Philadelphia Flyers. Now, GM Bob Clarke is hoping a couple subsequent moves also pay off.
With Yushkevich joining Eric Desjardins, Marcus Ragnarsson, Chris Therien, Kim Johnsson and Eric Weinrich, the Flyers believed that rookies Dennis Seidenberg and Jim Vandermeer needed to play rather than watch. That makes all the sense in the world, but it still is a bitter pill for the rookies, especially Seidenberg, who had played in 58 games. Vandermeer had played in 22 games. Both had done well.
And both need to keep playing regularly.
"I'm not happy about it, but it's better to be playing than sitting out, and I know I have to stay in shape," Seidenberg told Tim Panaccio of the Philadelphia Inquirer. "They have six veterans now and someone has to sit. That's how it is and I can't change that."
"I'm not against whatever helps them out," Vandermeer agreed. "At least we're going to be playing, and if someone goes down, we'll get called back up."
Especially since the AHL's Philadelphia Phantoms play across the parking lot from the First Union Center.
"In some ways, they should be angry about it," Clarke said of their demotion. "They both played well enough to be in the NHL. For the time being, at least, we've got to keep them playing. There is no point for kids that age to be sitting here a week or two and not playing.
"They're young players getting their careers started. And they have done a really good job for us. We've got veterans who are more experienced going into playoff wars. They will be up here when we need them, and when the Phantoms' season is over, they will be back. There is no form of punishment here."
Rather a lesson in reality.

you can hear me coming down the hall
if I could just hear your pretty voice
I don't think I need to see at allSoft hair and a velvet tongue
I want to give you what you give to me
and every breath that is in your lungs
is a tiny little gift to me
