The Original Stars Hockey League has suspended play for the time being, hoping to regroup and deliver a better product at a future date.
The four-on-four exhibition series, based in Ontario, was meant to give locked out NHL players games to play while they waited out the labour impasse, but the quality of the first few games wasn't up to par.
There was very little intensity, no hitting, and certainly no defence.
Toronto beat Detroit 16-13 in the opener last Friday night in Barrie, Ont., while Boston defeated Montreal 14-11 in Brampton, Ont., on Monday night. While a crowd of 2,176 showed up for the first game in Barrie, only a few hundred fans paid to see Monday's game.
The next game was slated for Sunday in Sarnia, Ont., and that has been cancelled along with the rest of the schedule.
The OSHL said Wednesday it "plans to take the necessary time to sign additional players, finalize scheduling and sponsorship deals.''
"We would like to have had a year to plan this calibre of entertainment, instead we've had three weeks,'' Randy Gumbley, president of the OSHL, said in a statement.
Dan Cloutier of the Vancouver Canucks, Bryan McCabe of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Andrew Raycroft of the Boston Bruins, Mike Fisher of the Ottawa Senators and Mike Comrie of the Phoenix Coyotes were among the 50-odd NHLers in the six-team circuit.
