Police-Officer Greg Magic Johnston. Erinnert mich als Titel erstmal an den Super-Cop.
In Antwort auf:Three athletes to be inducted into Hall of Fame
This year, three athletes will be automatically inducted into the Barrie Sports Hall of Fame.
According to the constitution of the Barrie Sports Hall of Fame Society, athletes who medal in an international event are automatically inducted.
This is the first year in which all three Inductees are receiving automatic induction, typifying the athletic excellence that is coming out of Barrie, said Bob Palmer, chairperson of the society.
This year will see the addition of Jeffrey Buttle (figure skating), Greg Johnston (hockey) and Rhonda Willison (figure skating).
They will join a rich sports history of athletes and builders whose portraits line the walls of the Allandale Recreation Centre. They will join the likes of Red Story, Ron Hoggarth, and Bobbie Rosenfield.
The portraits of the three inductees will be unveiled at the Barrie Sports Hall of Fame Society induction ceremony on Wednesday, Oct. 5, at 8 p.m. As well, current and past honoured teams will be recognized, along with Coach of the Year, Steve Kelman, and Athlete of the Year, Leslie Hawker, and an unsung hero. Members of the public are encouraged to attend.
Jeffrey Buttle was born in Smooth Rock Falls. He began his skating when he was two years old. In 1995, when he was 12, Buttle and his family moved to Barrie so he could train with the Mariposa Club under Doug Leigh and Lee Barkell. A graduate from Innisdale Secondary School, Buttle continues his studies at the University of Toronto. In 1998, he finished second in the Canadian Juniors held in Hamilton. At the Senior Level he placed sixth in 2000 and in 2002 finished a strong third at the Nationals. He was honoured as Barrie's Amateur Athlete of the Year for his accomplishments in 2002.
In 2003, Buttle placed second in the Canadian Championships and 15th in the World Championships. In 2004 he was on the podium four times in International competitions. Earlier this year, he became the Canadian Senior Men's Figure Skating Champion. In March, he represented Canada at the World Championships in Moscow and won the silver medal.
Barrie's Greg Johnston played his entire minor hockey in Barrie one level above his age group. In 1982, he was drafted 10th overall by the Toronto Marlboros. In spite of missing part of the 1982-83 season with a broken ankle, Johnston had a successful OHL career and in the NHL draft he was selected 42nd overall by the Boston Bruins. In 1985, he played for Canada at the World Junior Championships in Helsinki and won the gold medal. Over the next four years, Johnston played for Boston and their farm team in Maine. He played in the Stanley Cup finals for the Bruins in 1988 and in 1990. After being traded to Toronto in 1990, he played for their AHL farm teams in Newmarket and St. John's. During his NHL career, he played in 187 games with 26 goals and 55 assists. In 1994 Johnston continued with his hockey career in Germany and it was there that he retired from hockey in 2002.
Johnston and his family moved back to Barrie where Greg is now a Barrie police officer.
Rhonda Willison was born in Hamilton in 1980 and she and her family moved back to Barrie in 1982. Willison attended Allandale, Assikinack and Portage View elementary schools and spent her high school years at Innisdale.
When she was eight, she began her figure skating career training in the Thornton Arena with the Special Olympics coach Janet Collins. In the Special Olympics program Willison excelled as a skater. She was a Regional Champion from 1994 to 2000 and was a medalist in the Provincial Championships in 1995 and again in 1999. Competing at the National Level, she was a two-time Gold Medalist winning the Canadian Championships in Calgary in 1996 and in Ottawa in 2000.
In 1997, she competed in the Special Olympic World Winter Games where she won gold and silver medals.
Willison currently speaks to students and skates at many area events. She threw out the season-opening pitch for the Blue Jays, appeared on Terri Clark's video "No Fear" and is a spokesperson for the Special Olympics.
der Seitentitel hat mich allerdings erstmal stutzig gemacht. Auf deutsches Hockey gibt man in Nordamerika zwar nicht das Meiste, aber "Special Olympics" täte dem Greg dann doch unrecht
